EXPLORE THE WORLD OF UNICHIP

Optimal tuning is not getting the most out of the engine, its getting the best without compromising the engine’s reliability.

Our promise to you

Unichip strive to promise less and do more when it comes to your vehicle.

We promise our customer that their car will be as light as possible on fuel, when driven calmly. Secondly, we promise that the vehicle will make as much safe power as possible when going foot flat on the accelerator pedal.

Tuning a vehicle is not fitting white speedometer dials, wings, skirts or even different camshafts or exhausts! Tuning is simply adjusting the three things an engine works with to be at the best possible combinations for all conditions.Unfortunately, the true meaning of the word has been confused in the past few years with events like the SEMA Tuning show and our favourite TV persona Chip Foose, we at Unichip are avid viewers of Overhaulin where they rush around to get done with their latest and greatest project so that they will be in time for the SEMA Tuning show.

There is only one key item missing in the mix of emotions and camera’s:  there is no dynamometer and no measurement equipment around to optimally tune the engines in those newly rebuild beauties.

Any ordinary internal combustion engine works with three things only. For it to run properly it needs fuel, ignition and compressed air. It needs nothing else! Any problem that you will ever have with tuning an engine will be one of these three things that isn’t there, isn’t the right amount, isn’t there at the right time, isn’t mixed well enough or is mixed with something else (like water.) If these three things are there in the right amount at the right time, properly mixed and undiluted (not mixed with something else) it will create a proper power stroke.

This is where the Unichip plays a pivotal role, to optimally tune your vehicle’s engine. When the Unichip is connected to your vehicle (wired in, Plug & Play or Easy Connect harness) a skilled tuner will optimally tune your vehicle with the Unichip on a dynamometer whilst monitoring temperatures, emissions and power, to get your vehicle to be as light as possible on fuel when you drive calmly and to make as much safe power as possible when your foot is flat on the accelerator.

So the first question that comes to mind is: Why did the factory not optimally tune my vehicle when it was built. Just like the piano example your vehicle was built in a factory, mostly in a mass production environment, where time does not allow for each individual vehicle to be optimally tuned.

The second issue is that the manufacturer needs to develop a map for the vehicle with the best and worst possible fuel qualities and prevailing conditions in mind from the warmest countries with the worst fuel to the cooler countries with super clean fuels, this limits what they can set the engine for.

So, is the Unichip tuner smarter than the manufacturer and all their engineers? Not at all, but your Unichip tuner has more info, he knows what fuel quality you have in your country, he knows what the prevailing conditions are. With this data and the Unichip’s ability to fine-tune the vehicle’s signals the Unichip tuner can optimise the engine’s performance.

Optimised safe power from a properly tuned engine.

DID YOU KNOW

THE UNICHIP WAS FIRST INTRODUCED TO THE AUTOMOTIVE MARKET IN 1993 MAKING THE FIRST OF ITS KIND. AFTER ALMOST 3 DECADES OF UNICHIP DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE IT IS THE MOST ADVANCED VEHICLE PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT CHIP ON THE MARKET.

ADVANCED VEHICLE INTELLIGENCE

The next revolution of performance enhancement was the creation of the Unichip that was first introduced to market in 1993. With more than three decades of development, The UNICHIP X is undoubtedly the most powerful performance chip in the world today as it can be reprogrammed many times over. More importantly, your chosen Unichip contains specific engine maps for your car that is optimaly tuned, so the performance maps for a Toyota Fortuner will be very different to that of a Ford Ranger TDCi or Volkswagen Amarok TDI.

My Vehicle and Unichip

The Unichip is undoubtedly one of the most popular names in chip tuning; not only does it allow for great increases in performance, but it is a piggy-back system that leaves your car’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU) completely intact. The Unichip is considered to be among the best ways of chip tuning your vehicle and it has a worldwide reputation for being effective and reliable.

Engine Control Unit (ECU) Magic

Engine Control Unit (ECU) Magic. The engine control unit (ECU) or engine management system (EMS) is certainly a revolutionary innovation. It was only an idea in someone’s mind’s eye back in the 1970s and 1980s. Indeed, electronic controls for automotive applications...

Advancement Of Electronics

The Advancement of Electronics. Think back to the days before the advancement of electronics. From the day that we saw electronics starting to appear in cars, many had much to say about this. A lot of criticism and objection came from the side of traditionalists. They...

Fuel Injection – A Science In Itself

Fuel injection – A science in itself. You may think that an engine and its fuel injection is a simple thing, right? You simply add fuel, set it on fire, and the magic starts to happen. The wheels turn and off you go! It sounds simple enough if you oversimplify it like...

The Juggle Between Power And Economy

The juggle between Power and Economy. Balance. We are all looking for a sense of balance. This is especially true of the cars we drive every day. It may not seem like it, but car designers try to balance all manners of conflicting requirements. They do this to create...

Far-Fetched Claims Can Cost You Dearly

Far-fetched claims can cost you dearly. At Unichip, we believe that there is a big difference between modifying and tuning/optimising. In fact, to remove all doubt, at Unichip we tune and optimise, we do not modify. You may think that optimising, tuning and modifying...

Should You Modify Or Optimise?

Modify or Optimise – Choose wisely. Should you modify or optimise? How do you get the most performance from your engine? Most people think that you have to modify your engine to achieve performance. The act of modification usually requires the disassembling, changing...

It’s All About The Air

The importance of Air. When we get right down to the basics, a lot of emphases is put on the importance of air. Most of the engine development is about getting more air into the engine’s combustion chamber. The more air the intake valves can “inhale” before closing,...

Not All Engines Are Created Equally

It is sad but true when it comes to engines, they don’t manufacture them similarly. The user manual and official literature might state that your car’s engine produces, let’s say, 100 kW.  Well, they just round that figure off from the average that they obtain from other similar engines. Very few of these engine types will develop exactly 100 kW. The reason is that engines are mechanical devices that consist of hundreds of parts. These parts all have to fit together well to make it work. The constraints of economical mass production mean that manufacturers allow a certain tolerance range for the parts it manufactures. That means that these parts have to be of certain dimensions within an accepted range of variance. It would simply be too expensive – and virtually impossible – to mass-manufacture engines to such fine tolerances that they are identical.

TOWING & 4X4

For these conditions, you can select an off road setting on your Unichip, that gives you more low-down power at low engine speeds. This is also an ideal setting if you are towing a large caravan or boat, or towing someone who does not have the power of a Unichip out of the mud or water.

STANDARD

Reprogramming the vehicle’s Electronic Control Unit can be dangerous and you may lose the ability to revert to the standard settings if something goes wrong. If you have opted for a Unichip Easy Connect, you can plug it in and remove it as you wish, such as when you take your vehicle for a service or replace your vehicle.

MAX SAFE POWER

Many performance chips simply increase the fuel pressure, boost and throttle input. The feeling of power is great, but there is nothing that monitors engine temperature, changes inputs for different driving needs, measures over-fuelling and the fuel-air mixture or the many other elements that are required to deliver safe power.

Fuel Economy

In light of our ever-increasing fuel prices, achieving better fuel economy has become a priority for most people, but they do not always know how to do it.  Short of the oft-preached mantra of driving more slowly, what else can one do to improve the fuel economy of one’s vehicle, if at all?

ANTI-THEFT

Select and lock the vehicle in this setting when you park somewhere and are worried about the safety of the vehicle. In this mode the engine is rendered completely powerless and it will not deliver any power to the wheels. Your engine will merely turn, but nothing will happen.
