The Quest for More Power.

You are frustrated because you require sufficient power from your car. When you put your foot down flat on the accelerator, your car doesn’t respond with the vigour you desire. Power seems like the elusive Yeti. You service your car, keep it in perfect running order, but there is not enough power. You know your car can do better. Should you opt for some power modification? How can you improve your car’s performance in a safe manner?

Increase engine size?

One of the most expensive but effective ways to increase your engine’s power output is to increase its size. All other things being the same, a standard larger engine will always have more power than a standard smaller one. The only way to do this is to increase the bore diameter and/or the piston stroke of the cylinders. The former requires that the engine is stripped down to the last bolt. You will then have to take the block to an engineering shop.

If there is sufficient space in the block, they will bore the cylinders to a larger size. You would have to buy several parts to fit the new configuration. These parts include new pistons and probably connecting rods as well. Increasing the stroke might allow you to reuse the existing pistons. You will, however, need a new crankshaft and possibly shorter connecting rods. All things considered, enlarging the engine is expensive. The power gain may also not necessarily be enough unless the work is accompanied by additional expensive modifications.

Adding some modifications

Adding forced induction, like a supercharger or turbocharger, is also possible. This is an expensive endeavour as well, and there can be many pitfalls if the work is not done professionally. You will have to lower the compression ratio. You will most probably also have to replace the pistons and hope that all the plumbing fits under the bonnet. An upgrade of the cooling system will also be on the menu. How else will you deal with the additional heat? More than likely, there will be a reduction in the life expectancy of your engine. This will be due to the additional loads on the engine for which it was not designed. You might also experience trouble with the reliability of the driveline components. Think about the increased torque loads imposed on the gearbox, clutch, and CV joints.

You may consider mild hardware changes to the intake and exhaust system. Combine this with some optimising work on the cylinder head, and it may yield reasonable gains. This may also not be as expensive as other procedures. Nonetheless, modern engines do not always lend themselves to such quick, backyard optimisation, and you may forfeit your guarantee.
