Why Live Tuning on a Dyno Matters — Especially for Older Vehicles

Real example: Mitsubishi Pajero 3200 Di-D

This Mitsubishi Pajero 3200 Di-D arrived for a Unichip installation — but as soon as we began the initial dyno runs, something wasn’t right.

Even before tuning, the Pajero’s power curve showed unusual dips, incorrect fueling, and inconsistent boost response.
This is exactly why live tuning on a dynamometer is so important, and why every vehicle — especially older ones — should be checked properly before tuning.

Why a Dyno Is Essential (Not Optional)

When we live tune a vehicle, we connect:
📊 Boost gauges
🔥 Air–fuel ratio (AFR) meters
🧪 Exhaust gas readings
🚗 And simulate real-world driving conditions under load

This allows us to monitor the engine’s behavior in real time, something you cannot do safely or easily on the road.

If AFR is too rich → you get black smoke, poor fuel economy, you risk high EGTs or damaged pistons.

If AFR is too lean → the vehicle is under powered and has poor fuel economy.

If boost control is unstable → turbo and pistons are at risk.

The Pajero showed clear signs of incorrect fueling, which would have gone unnoticed without dyno testing.

Why We Load a Generic Map First

Before custom tuning, we often load a safe, generic Unichip map to check:

✔ How the car responds
✔ Whether boost comes in smoothly
✔ Whether AFR behaves correctly
✔ If sensors, injectors, turbo vanes, or pumps show irregularities

This step alone often reveals issues owners never knew they had — like:
⚠ Weak injectors
⚠ Sticking turbo vanes
⚠ Dirty MAF/MAP sensors
⚠ Incorrect fueling
⚠ Boost leaks
⚠ Timing pull
⚠ Over-fueling or under-fueling

It’s an essential safety step, not just “extra tuning.”

Once the Issues Are Identified — THEN We Tune

After diagnosing the Pajero’s irregularities, we installed the Unichip and performed a full live tune, optimising boost, fueling and torque delivery safely.

The results were massive:

Power Gains (bhp)

2,500 rpm: 70.6 ➜ 112.3 (+59%)
3,000 rpm: 80.1 ➜ 128.6 (+60%)
3,500 rpm: 66.3 ➜ 126.4 (+91%)
4,000 rpm: 61.1 ➜ 121.3 (+99%)

This isn’t just “more power” — this is a vehicle that now runs safer, smoother, and more reliably than when it arrived.

The End Result?

A Pajero that:
✅ Pulls stronger from low rpm
✅ Has smooth, predictable power delivery
✅ Runs cleaner with corrected AFR
✅ Responds instantly to throttle input
✅ Is safer and more reliable than before

This is what live tuning on a dyno is all about — monitoring everything, correcting issues and unlocking performance the safe way.
