Engine Wear

Engine Wear.

One thing is for sure, and that is engine wear. Can we extend engine life and reduce engine wear? Another certainty. You don’t just pop open a modern car’s bonnet and restore it to its working order when something goes crooked. Yes, some faults are obvious and a normal person with a degree of mechanical aptitude can fix it. However, not anybody will nowadays be able to work on engines that electronics control. Engines are mostly impervious to the shallow fiddling of the average owner. Engines and engine control systems are more complicated than in the past. When things go wrong, they can be expensive to put right. Most of us who think we know a bit of what is going on beneath the bonnet is now stuck. We are now only in the position of a supervisor; we dare little more than periodically checking the vital fluids.

Prolong engine functionality

It is more important than ever to ensure that your modern marvel of a motorcar lasts as long as possible. We do our best to extend engine life. Cars are expensive and we believe that you want value for your money. We also believe that you want to can get amazing mileage out of your car’s engine. You can, if you care for it well. So, what must you do to join the “high-miler club” for your specific model? Quite a lot, in fact, and it is not complicated either. Some common sense and preventative maintenance, and you can get thousands of trouble-free kilometers from your engine.

Oil is the lifeblood of the engine (especially of the turbocharger), so the engine must always have enough clean oil. Oil should be replaced more frequently in South Africa, because of our temperature variations, dust, and dirt roads. These all serve to contaminate your oil. Even if you live in the city, combustion by-products can contaminate your oil and break down sooner. This happens due to all the stop-start driving and fluctuating engine temperatures. The bottom line is that engines that get fresh oil more frequently last longer.

Remember that most of the engine wear takes place in the first 10 minutes after you start your cold engine. It is therefore important to reduce those cold minutes to the minimum. While the engine is still cold, you should drive it with a very light foot for at least 5-8 km. Drive off straight away, do not let it idle! An idling engine warms up very slowly and wears more. Before you shut down older models with a turbo, let it idle for a minute or two. This is good for them, especially when they are very hot and did a lot of work.

Engine modifications can shorten engine life

Engine modifications usually shorten the lifespan of an engine’s life. If you overload the working capacity of a component, it will contribute to excess engine wear. The optimal functioning of your engine’s control unit (ECU) will ensure that you have the best economy and power. You will enjoy these without having to modify your car. That is why you can benefit from a Unichip. The Unichip is a non-invasive piggyback computer that optimises your car’s ECU settings. You can have all the power and economy your engine can deliver, without shortening its life by a single kilometer.

Do not add to normal engine wear. The choice is yours. You can extend engine life. Do not miss out. Click here to contact us and have our technicians fit your Unichip today.
