Improve Fuel Economy

Improve Fuel Economy With A Piggyback Chip

It is often said that vehicles leave the factory tuned for economy and not for power.  This may be true to some extent, because very stringent emissions legislation, especially in North America and Europe, has meant that vehicle manufacturers have had to pay greater mind to fuel economy and CO2 figures than kilowatt figures.  The question remains, however, whether this train of thought means that your vehicle leaves the factory as thrifty as it could be.  Could you do something to your engine to improve fuel economy even further?

The answer is usually yes and there is a simple reason for it.  Many of the large vehicle makers manufacture millions and millions of vehicles per year, giving new meaning to the phrase “mass production”.  Mass production brings economies of scale and better technology at lower prices, but there are also sacrifices to be made.  Mass-produced cars leave the factory with their engine management systems programmed in a certain way.  This programming is identical for every single vehicle, but no two vehicles are ever identical.  In fact, two vehicle engines coming off the production line may have power figures that differ by more than fifteen percent, yet both engines would fall within the reasonable mechanical engineering limits.

Since it is impossible to produce two engines that are identical in every way, they should not have their engine management systems programmed in exactly the same way either.  This is where a piggyback chip comes in.  The best of these modify the engine management's parameters to suit the characteristics of that specific engine.  When the chip is fitted and the vehicle is retuned on a dynamometer, there is usually an increase in efficiency to be had, manifesting in better power delivery and often better fuel consumption too.

The Unichip can improve fuel economy and power, allowing your engine to spread its wings.  Contact us for more information.
